Places to visit in Makkah

Beyond the Haram: Nur, Thawr, al-Mu’alla, Hudaybiyyah and Arafat. The visit programme depends on the group and on permits.

The Haram first

The true stop in Makkah is Masjid al-Haram and the Kaaba. Tawaf and sa’y are the pillars of Umrah; other visits are virtuous, not obligatory. A tired or unwell guest is not measured by how many hills they climbed. The teacher sets the visit coach jealously of time in the Haram.

The places below are the stops of a classic Umrah group. Not every tour includes all of them. Road, restoration and official permit decide that week.

Mountains and caves

Jabal al-Nur and Hira. The cave where the first revelation to the Prophet (peace be upon him) is remembered stands on this mountain. The climb is hard in heat and on steps. Those with notes on heart, knee or blood pressure speak with the teacher; reaching the summit is not a condition of Umrah.

Thawr. The refuge of the night of Hijrah. Distance and walking are planned apart from Nur. Cramming both mountains into one day exhausts most groups.

Cemetery, mosques, the boundary

Jannat al-Mu’alla. Makkah’s historic cemetery, toward the north of the Haram. The grave of Khadijah (may God be pleased with her) is remembered here. Manners, quiet, no insistence on unauthorised pictures.

Masjid al-Jinn and its surroundings. A memory from the sira; it remains a short stop.

Tan’im / Aishah mosque. On the Madinah side of the Haram boundary, one of the known points for a new Umrah ihram. An intention of an extra Umrah depends on the group plan and on time; it is not written onto every package as a slogan.

Hudaybiyyah (Shumaysi). The memory of the Pledge of Ridwan and the treaty, a good distance from the Haram. A coach day is set separately.

The geography of Hajj (visible on Umrah too)

Arafat, Muzdalifah, Mina. An Umrah group does not live these as Hajj days; a short supplication and an explanation at the stop is enough. Namirah mosque is shown at Arafat. The jamarat bridge sits on a crowd and security line.

Taif is sometimes a separate day or a separate programme; it should not be assumed part of every Umrah package.
