What you need to know about ihram

Intention and talbiyah, izar and rida, the miqat, the prohibitions. The cloth is not ihram itself; we set the intention in the seminar.

Ihram is not the name of a cloth

Ihram is intention and talbiyah: making some otherwise lawful things forbidden to oneself by intending Hajj, Umrah or qiran. People call the two cloths men wear — rida and izar — ihram; a woman’s ihram is her ordinary modest dress. There is no intention without cloth, but cloth without intention is not ihram.

Hajj and Umrah are not performed without ihram. That is why the miqat is a boundary without jokes.

Miqat and where you dress

A person coming from outside the Haram region should be in ihram at the miqat, out of reverence for the Kaaba. People are spoken of in three groups: residents of Makkah, those who live in the hill zone, those who come from beyond. A group from Turkey is the third.

Groups landing straight in Jeddah pass the miqat in the air; ihram is put on at the airport in Turkey, and the intention is completed at the moment the teacher describes — often near landing. Those who land in Madinah and go to Makkah by road or train put on ihram at the hotel or at Dhul Hulayfah.

Shower, nails and scent are settled before ihram. The list of prohibitions while in ihram — sewn clothing for men, breaches of covering, vegetation and hunting among them — sits item by item in the seminar. Expiation for a breach is the teacher’s work, not a blog’s.

Practical notes

For men, a belt, a pouch, glasses and a watch are not a problem in most views; a scented wet wipe is. For women, uncovering the face and gloves are discussed headings; the group follows the teacher’s school, and does not hold a fatwa contest in the back row of the aircraft.

Leaving ihram in Umrah is by shaving or shortening. In Hajj the order follows the rites.
